Whiteywood

Melicytus ramiflorus

mahoe

Mahoe grows rather like a weed but the beautiful purple berries provide a valuable food source for birds with in the reserve. It begins life as a rather tall stem with leaves arranged down this stem relatively far apart. As it matures the leaf arrangement resembles more that as shown in the picture. The flowers of the whiteywood are produced from the stem which is unusual but also seen in kohekohe.
