BETTY HARRIS (1921 – 2018)

Betty, a long-term resident of Howick, became active in Forest and Bird after retiring from a distinguished career as a teacher of Biology. In promoting her advanced ideas on climate change and energy efficiency, in stirring her associates into action over bush preservation and restoration, and through her active part in field forays she made many firm friends. On the other hand local politicians and officials had to face a formidable personality for whom “No” was not an answer. It was this formidable personality which was instrumental in convincing the Manukau City Council to buy Archie Somerville’s farm and thus ensure the Mangemangeroa Reserve bush was preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. Her passion and commitment to conservation has created an incredible legacy.
